Grip Giving Out Before Your Back on Pull-Ups? Here's the Fix
If your back and biceps still have gas left in the tank but your hands can't hold on anymore, your grip is the weak link holding back your pull-up progress — not your strength.
Why grip fails before your back does
Pulling movements demand a lot from your forearms and grip, which fatigue faster than the larger muscles doing most of the actual work. Sweaty palms and bar slip make it worse, cutting sets short before your back and biceps are anywhere near failure.
Training around a weak grip vs. fixing it
You can spend months on dedicated grip training to close that gap — or use a grip assist wrap to bridge it in the meantime so your pulling muscles actually get trained to failure. Our Anti-Slip Pull-Up Grip Assist wraps securely around the bar and your wrist, giving you a firmer hold so your back and biceps — not your grip — decide when the set ends.
Both approaches have their place: use a grip assist on heavy pulling days, and dedicated grip training (see our hand grip trainers) on the days you're specifically working to build it up.
